Akhannouch and Sánchez co-chair in Madrid the 13th High-Level Meeting: a new impetus for the Moroccan-Spanish strategic partnership

A renewed friendship and an asserted strategic convergence

The two officials underlined that the holding of this new edition of the HLM attests to the robustness of Moroccan-Spanish friendship and to the excellence of a bilateral relationship founded on trust, transparency and a shared ambition.

Beyond the symbolic value, this 13th edition reflects a convergence of views and confirms the mutual will to move forward together, within a sustainable and structured dynamic.

A dynamic driven by the shared vision of Mohammed VI and Felipe VI

The meeting is fully in line with the political dynamic initiated by the two Heads of State, His Majesty King Mohammed VI and His Majesty King Felipe VI, whose enlightened vision guides a modernised partnership resolutely oriented toward strategic cooperation.

Mr. Akhannouch and Mr. Sánchez welcomed the rigorous follow-up of the implementation of the Moroccan-Spanish roadmap of April 2022, which has become the anchor structure of all bilateral projects.

A strategic meeting after a decade of waiting

This 13th session comes after that of 2023 and ten years after the last meeting held in Madrid in 2015, highlighting the need for a regular pace for these high-level gatherings.

Both parties stressed the importance

  • of establishing a stable periodicity,
  • of considering a mid-term evaluation,
  • and of preserving the positive dynamic that has driven bilateral relations since the renewal of the partnership in 2022.

A comprehensive assessment of key issues

The meeting between Mr. Akhannouch and Mr. Sánchez made it possible to emphasize all the priority issues included in the 2022 roadmap, which will be subject to an in-depth evaluation in a climate of trust, consultation and ongoing cooperation.

The two leaders also stressed the importance of activating interparliamentary mechanisms, an essential lever for strengthening governmental commitments and ensuring their full implementation.

A welcoming ceremony marked by solemnity

Upon his arrival at the Moncloa Palace, Mr. Aziz Akhannouch was received by Mr. Pedro Sánchez with the official honours reserved for high dignitaries.

The two officials saluted the national colours to the sound of the two countries’ anthems before reviewing a detachment of a mixed battalion that rendered military honours.

A solemn ceremony that confirms the special place occupied by Morocco in Spain’s diplomatic landscape.
