The promotion of the rule of law and the protection of democracy are more necessary than ever and are seen as a sine qua non condition for building a better future for generations to come, stressed the presidents of these legislative institutions, while reiterating their unwavering determination to work hand in hand to achieve this goal, in full respect for the sovereignty of States.
Bringing together Rachid Talbi El Alami, President of the Moroccan House of Representatives, Mme Yaël Braun-Pivet, President of the French National Assembly, Adama Bictogo, President of the Ivorian National Assembly, and Aimé Boji Sangara, President of the National Assembly of the DRC, this quadripartite meeting was held on the sidelines of the inauguration ceremony of Côte d’Ivoire’s re-elected president, Alassane Ouattara.
In this regard, they expressed their commitment to fostering cooperation and collaboration both at the bilateral and multilateral levels, with other legislative bodies, for the promotion of a culture of peace and democracy, while giving the strengthening of the rule of law all the attention it deserves.
At the same time, the presidents of the parliaments highlighted the pivotal role played by parliamentary diplomacy in establishing constructive communication, in promoting closeness and mutual understanding, and in facilitating dialogue among nations.
This meeting also offered participants the opportunity to exchange knowledge and experience on several issues of common interest, notably renewable energy, water stress, climate change, as well as artificial intelligence, and the digitization and digitalization of parliamentary work.
In a statement to the press following the meeting, Talbi El Alami expressed his joy at being in Côte d’Ivoire to represent HM King Mohammed VI at the inauguration ceremony of the re-elected president of the Republic of Côte d’Ivoire.
“It is a solemn moment and a confirmation of democracy in this brotherly country, especially at a time when democracy itself is under threat in various parts of the world,” said Talbi El Alami, noting that Côte d’Ivoire has always defended and promoted the principles of peace and democracy.
“Côte d’Ivoire has given a lesson in democracy by organizing its elections and offering the Ivorian people the opportunity to elect their president—a choice confirmed by the Constitutional Council,” he said, adding that he was impressed by the quality of the infrastructure built in Côte d’Ivoire, a country advancing confidently toward development and progress.
On another note, he praised the depth and exemplary nature of the bilateral relations between the Kingdom and Côte d’Ivoire, thanks to the enlightened leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI and the Ivorian president, Alassane Ouattara. In this regard, he recalled the historic visits made by the Sovereign to this West African country.
