This evening marked the start of a series of cultural and sporting events initiated by the Consulate, in partnership with the African Cultural Institute (ICA) and the Franco Moroccan circle “The Moroccan Net Work”, throughout this major continental sporting competition.
The event brought together local elected officials, members of African diasporas of various backgrounds living in Bordeaux, institutional representatives, civil society actors, as well as figures from the diplomatic, cultural, sporting, and media communities, who came to share this important moment of African football in a friendly atmosphere.
On this occasion, the Kingdom’s Consul General in Bordeaux, Nouzha Sahel, recalled that the 35th edition of AFCON being held in Morocco reflects the Kingdom’s new vision in the organization of sporting events, positioning it as a major player in sports cooperation. By hosting this large scale event, she said, Morocco is fully committed to making it a success, in line with the High Orientations of His Majesty King Mohammed VI and the aspirations of the continent, so as to reflect the depth of its long standing relations with sister African countries, based on cooperation, active solidarity, and mutual respect.
The diplomat also stressed that “AFCON 2025 represents far more than a sporting event. It embodies Morocco’s know how and its proven ability to organize major continental and international sporting events.”
“Through this initiative, the Consulate General aims to support the unfolding of AFCON 2025 and to promote the values of closeness, sharing, and fraternity by celebrating sport as a vehicle for dialogue, cohesion, and international outreach,” she added.
The initiative also seeks to highlight the quality of the ties of friendship and cooperation between Morocco, the city of Bordeaux, and the Nouvelle Aquitaine region, marked by a rich history, strong human exchanges, and a shared cultural heritage. Ms. Sahel noted in this regard that sport plays a key role in this dynamic of exchange, serving as an important lever for bringing territories closer together and strengthening bridges between the two sides of the Mediterranean.
During the evening, guests welcomed the organization of AFCON 2025 in Morocco, praising the quality of the infrastructures put in place by the Kingdom, the efficiency of its organizational arrangements, and its constant commitment to the development of African sport and the continent’s global standing.
