This election of Morocco, by unanimous vote of the members, comes at the conclusion of the work of the 21st meeting of the UIL Board of Directors, recently held in Hamburg, which also saw the election of the former Vice President and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Costa Rica, Ms Epsy Campbell Barr, as Vice President of the Board of Directors of this United Nations institute.
The election of Ms Zohour Alaoui to the presidency of the UIL Board of Directors reflects the international recognition of the commitment of the Kingdom of Morocco and the pioneering role of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist Him, in favor of the promotion of education as an essential pillar of peace and sustainable development.
It also further strengthens Morocco’s active role within UNESCO and the UIL, notably through the 7th International Conference on Adult Education (CONFINTEA VII), organized in June 2022 in Marrakech, which resulted in the adoption of the Marrakech Framework for Action and the creation of the African Foundation for Lifelong Learning.
The 21st meeting of the Board of Directors, on the same occasion, added the cities of Oujda and Casablanca to UNESCO’s Global Network of Learning Cities, in recognition of their strong commitment to making the right to education for all and at all ages a reality at the local level. It should be recalled that Fez, Agadir and Essaouira have also been part of this global network since 2023.
