Hassan II Foundation Hosts Writer Kebir Mustapha Ammi for the Presentation of His Work « الفضائل غير الأخلاقية » “The Immoral Virtues”

Kebir Mustapha Ammi is a Moroccan-French playwright, novelist and poet, born in Taza in 1952. Based in France for more than thirty years, he is the author of around twenty works, including La Fille du vent (Denoël editions, 2002), Le Ciel sans rendez-vous (2007), Mardoukh (Gallimard editions, 2011) and Le Barbier aux mains rouges (Elyzad editions, 2025), a work that won the Moussa Konaté Prize for Francophone crime fiction.

The writings of Kebir Mustapha Ammi explore various literary genres, drawing inspiration from themes linked to the Greater Maghreb, and addressing the suffering associated with exclusion and the quest for identity. His work weaves a subtle balance between fiction and history. In 2016, he was decorated by His Majesty King Mohammed VI with the Wissam of National Merit at the rank of Officer.

In his novel « الفضائل غير الأخلاقية », published by Gallimard in 2009, Kebir Mustapha Ammi recounts the journey of Moumen, a young Moroccan from the 16th century who finds in knowledge a means of personal fulfillment. This intellectual awakening leads him on a long journey beyond the borders of his country, towards unknown lands on the American continent.

Throughout his journey, he encounters singular characters and comes face to face with human violence and the harshness of existence. Between the clash of civilizations and beliefs, he discovers the world, books and the power of thought. In order to survive in hostile lands, he is sometimes forced to go beyond the limits of what is considered acceptable. Through these trials, he comes to understand that virtue is not always embodied by those who claim to represent it.
