The Minister of Health and Social Protection, Amine Tehraoui, made the statement during a high-level presidential meeting on the operationalization of the African Medicines Agency, organized on the sidelines of the 39th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU).
During this meeting, held under the theme “Accelerating the Operationalization and Universal Ratification of the African Medicines Agency for Quality Medical Products and Health Security in Africa,” the minister welcomed the progress achieved in the operationalization process. He recalled that Morocco had supported the appointment process of the Director General and had backed the candidacy through to its successful conclusion.
Mr. Tehraoui reaffirmed Morocco’s full support for this strategic phase in strengthening the Agency and called for continued efforts in this regard.
He underlined that the AMA constitutes a major strategic tool for the African continent, particularly in harmonizing regulatory frameworks related to medicines and medical devices, strengthening the quality and safety of medical products, improving the supply of medicines and medical devices, and supporting the health sovereignty of Member States.
The minister stressed the urgent need to equip the Agency with the necessary human, technical and financial resources to fulfill its mandate. He noted that the AMA plays a central role in strengthening national health systems, preventing and managing health crises, and establishing robust mechanisms enabling Member States to effectively respond to the needs of their populations.
Emphasizing that the AMA is an essential lever for building collective health security across the continent, Mr. Tehraoui also praised the role of Rwanda, host country of the Agency, for its strong commitment both prior to the establishment of the AMA and during the current operationalization phase.
