In Rabat, a Roundtable Highlights the Rights and Leadership of Refugee Women

Hosted at the library of the Orient-Occident Foundation, the meeting brought together representatives of institutions, civil society organizations, international partners, and refugee women to discuss access to rights, justice, and women’s empowerment.

Among the speakers were Amina Salhi from the National Human Rights Council (CNDH), Professor Omayma Achour, a law professor at the Faculty of Legal, Economic and Social Sciences, and Lamia Benmalek, a lawyer and feminist activist. The discussions also highlighted initiatives led by UNHCR and its partners to strengthen the protection and empowerment of refugee women in Morocco.

Civil society organizations, including the Moroccan Association for the Support and Promotion of Small Enterprises (AMAPPE) and ProgettoMondo, also shared their experiences in supporting refugee women, particularly through entrepreneurship support programs and community engagement initiatives.

The roundtable also gave the floor to Justine, a refugee from the Central African Republic who has been living in Morocco since 2016, who shared her journey and her commitment within her community.

The event concluded with the presentation of symbolic awards to three refugee women recognized as agents of change, as well as a Ramadan solidarity bazaar and information stands from partner organizations, highlighting initiatives and services available to refugees.

Through this meeting, UNHCR Morocco and its partners sought to promote dialogue around the rights of refugee women and to highlight their essential role within their communities.
