“I am asking those countries to come and protect their own territory, because it is their territory,” Donald Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One, arguing that Washington does not depend on this maritime route due to its own access to oil.
Donald Trump stated that China receives around 90 percent of its oil through the Strait of Hormuz, while the United States imports only a minimal share through that route. However, he declined to specify whether China would join the proposed coalition.
“It would be good if other countries would police it with us, and we will help them. We will work with them,” he added. The U.S. president has already called on China, France, Japan, South Korea and the United Kingdom to join American forces in monitoring the strait.
