During his talks with Speaker of Morocco’s House of Councillors Mohamed Ould Errachid, on the sidelines of the 152nd General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Blondel underscored the consistency of Belgium’s position, as expressed by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Maxime Prévot during his previous visits to Morocco.
The Belgian official also praised the strong ties of friendship between the two countries and their close bonds, particularly between the two Royal Families, as well as the important role of the Moroccan community in Belgium.
Blondel further stated that steps are underway to prepare a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Belgian Senate and the House of Councillors, which is scheduled to be signed at a later date.
For his part, Ould Errachid noted that relations between Morocco and Belgium are not limited to strong political and diplomatic ties, but also encompass significant human, cultural, and economic dimensions, reinforced by ongoing cooperation and the active presence of the Moroccan community in Belgium.
He expressed his hope to see parliamentary cooperation between the two countries more effective in order to support this positive momentum, through increased exchange visits, intensified consultation on regional and international issues of common interest, and support for initiatives to develop economic, social, and human cooperation.
Ould Errachid further specified that this meeting represents an opportunity to lay the groundwork for promising bilateral parliamentary cooperation between the House of Councillors and the Belgian Senate, with a view to establishing an institutional framework for dialogue and communication capable of making parliamentary diplomacy an additional lever for fostering closer ties between the two friendly nations.
The Speaker of the House of Councillors, who is leading the Moroccan delegation to the 152nd IPU General Assembly, commended Belgium’s unwavering and progressive stance on the issue of the Moroccan Sahara.
