History repeats itself as Ahmed Talal’s words echo again for Morocco’s hero Bounou
Mirroring his iconic tribute from the 2022 World Cup, journalist Ahmed Talal once again praises Yassine Bounou and coach Walid Regragui after Morocco’s dramatic semi-final victory over Nigeria.

History has a way of circling back in Moroccan football, and Wednesday night in the AFCON 2025 semi final against Nigeria felt like another one of those rare, emotional echoes. Just as it did in Qatar in 2022, Morocco stood firm in a tense, goalless showdown before trusting its destiny to penalties, and just as it did back then, Yassine Bounou rose to the occasion to carry the nation forward.
After 120 minutes of high intensity football ended 0-0, Morocco prevailed 4-2 in the penalty shootout, booking their place in the AFCON final. It was a night defined by composure, courage and, above all, Bounou’s presence between the posts. Once again, he became the final barrier that opponents could not overcome.
This latest chapter triggered a powerful sense of déjà vu for Moroccan fans, and not only because of the shootout drama. Shortly after the victory, Moroccan journalist and founder of Le7TV Web TV, Ahmed Talal, recreated a moment that has remained engraved in the national memory since the 2022 World Cup.
Back then, following Morocco’s historic run to the semi finals in Qatar, Talal had publicly praised both Bounou and coach Walid Regragui for taking the national team further than it had ever gone on the world stage. His words had captured the emotion of a country discovering new limits for its footballing dreams.
On this AFCON night in 2025, with Morocco once again standing tall after a heroic performance from Bounou and a decisive victory under Regragui’s leadership, Talal delivered a speech that closely mirrored his famous tribute from three years earlier. Addressing the goalkeeper, he said:
“Yassine, on behalf of 40 million Moroccan people, I would like to thank you for making history again. You have brought back the smile after 22 years of patience.”
The words carried a different meaning this time, but the same emotional weight. In 2022, they celebrated a breakthrough on the global stage. In 2025, they marked another step toward continental glory, with Morocco now just one match away from lifting the Africa Cup of Nations.
For Walid Regragui, the moment was equally symbolic. After facing criticism and controversy in recent months, the coach has once again guided his team through a high pressure knockout match with calm authority. His tactical discipline, faith in his players and ability to keep the squad mentally strong under extreme pressure have once more been vindicated.
Morocco’s victory over Nigeria was not just a sporting success. It was a reminder of how this generation continues to build its own legacy, while also echoing the greatest moments of the past. From the World Cup in Qatar to the AFCON in 2025, the names may be the same, but the story keeps growing.
And as Ahmed Talal’s words once again resonated across the country, one thing felt clear: Moroccan football is living in an era where history does not just happen once. It finds a way to repeat itself, each time with a new achievement to celebrate.
