Atlas Lions: Mohamed Ouahbi’s First Squad Blends Notable Absences with New Bets

Morocco national team coach Mohamed Ouahbi unveiled his first squad list on Thursday, March 29, for the upcoming training camp, a key step in preparations for the 2026 World Cup.

Faced with several major absences in defense, including Nayef Aguerd and Jawad Yamiq, as well as the international retirement of Romain Saïss, the new coach was forced to rethink his plans. He has turned to available alternatives, marked by the return of Chadi Riad and the inclusion of new profiles such as Radouane Halhal.

Another notable decision is the call-up of Issa Diop, who had long been undecided about his international future between France and Morocco.

Among the choices drawing attention, the absence of Hakim Ziyech continues to spark debate. The former playmaker, despite showing a return to form with Wydad Casablanca, still does not feature in the coach’s plans.

Conversely, the squad gives prominence to new faces and players seeking to prove themselves, such as Soufiane Diop, reflecting a clear intent to refresh the group.

The Atlas Lions will play two friendly matches to assess this revamped squad, starting with a clash against Ecuador on March 27 in Madrid, followed by a second test against Paraguay on March 31 in Lens.

These encounters will allow Mohamed Ouahbi to fine-tune his tactical approach, observe his players in real conditions, and lay the foundations of his project ahead of upcoming international fixtures.

With this first squad announcement, the new coach is already making his mark, balancing continuity with renewal as he ushers in a new era for the Moroccan national team.
