Sweden Reaffirms Support for Morocco’s Autonomy Initiative for the Sahara
Sweden has reiterated its position in favor of a realistic political solution to the dispute over the Sahara, expressing support for the autonomy initiative proposed by Morocco as a credible basis for negotiations.

During a hearing before the Swedish Parliament, Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard stressed that Stockholm’s position remains grounded in respect for international law and the principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations. She also reaffirmed her country’s commitment to fully supporting the efforts led by the United Nations to reach a lasting and equitable political solution.
The Swedish head of diplomacy highlighted the importance of the UN-led process conducted by the personal envoy of the UN Secretary-General for the Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, whose mission aims to relaunch negotiations between the parties concerned.
Responding to a question from Social Democratic MP Johan Büser, the minister also referred to the impact of the recent United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, which she said opens a new phase that could help revive dialogue and support the search for a political solution to a conflict that has lasted for several decades.
In this context, Maria Malmer Stenergard stated that Sweden wishes to actively contribute to the emergence of a pragmatic and negotiated solution. She noted that Stockholm considers the Moroccan autonomy initiative to be a serious and credible framework for discussions, while continuing to coordinate with the United Nations to support diplomatic efforts aimed at advancing the political process.
