Morocco’s Ambassador to Spain, Karima Benyaich, held a series of meetings Thursday in Barcelona with senior Catalan officials to strengthen cooperation and explore new partnership opportunities between Morocco and Catalonia.

At the Palau de la Generalitat, Ms. Benyaich met with the President of the Generalitat of Catalonia, Salvador Illa. Discussions focused on ways to reinforce relations with Morocco, particularly in the fields of economy, investment and culture.
The ambassador also met with the Mayor of Barcelona, Jaume Collboni, with whom she discussed several shared areas of interest, including decentralized cooperation initiatives and prospects for developing joint projects.
Speaking to MAP, Ms. Benyaich stated that she agreed with Catalan officials to organize an upcoming cultural and economic week dedicated to Morocco, with the aim of showcasing investment opportunities, exchange prospects and the richness of Moroccan cultural heritage.
The diplomat also held talks with the Spanish Government’s Delegate in Catalonia, Carlos Prieto Gómez, on ways to deepen cooperation between Morocco and Catalan institutions, in a context marked by positive momentum in Moroccan-Spanish relations.
On this occasion, she highlighted the strong Moroccan presence in Catalonia, the largest foreign community in the region with 241,179 residents, emphasizing its exemplary integration and active contribution across various sectors of society.
Ms. Benyaich recalled Morocco’s commitment to strengthening exchanges with all Spanish regions, noting that the Moroccan community, representing 16.7 percent of the foreign population in Catalonia, plays a key role in bringing both sides closer together.
She also underscored the major role of women in Moroccan diplomacy and the importance His Majesty King Mohammed VI places on promoting female representation in decision-making positions. She noted that in Catalonia, three Moroccan consulates are led by women, reflecting the Kingdom’s commitment to equality and recognition of women’s expertise.
