University of Chile Awards Rector’s Medal to Moroccan Ambassador Kenza El Ghali
Santiago - The University of Chile has awarded its Rector's Medal to Morocco's Ambassador to Santiago Kenza El Ghali, in recognition of her academic, diplomatic, and political career and her contribution to strengthening ties between the Kingdom and Chile.

The ceremony, held on Tuesday at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Chile, was attended by 250 personalities from the political, economic, cultural, academic, and diplomatic spheres, including former Chilean President Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle, illustrating the influence and esteem enjoyed by Moroccan diplomacy in Chile.
On this occasion, Senator Francisco Chahuan, who presented the recipient with the Medal, highlighted El Ghali’s academic excellence, her political commitment as a member of parliament and deputy mayor of the city of Fez, her career as a university professor, and her work as a defender of women’s rights.
He also highlighted her active role in the parliamentary sphere in South America and her contribution to bridging cooperation between Latin America and Morocco, recalling the organization, for the first time, of the Congress of the Future in a country outside Latin America, an international event held in Morocco in December 2024.
It is in this context of strengthened political and institutional closeness that Chile has taken a positive stance on the issue of the Moroccan Sahara, expressing its support for the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco as a serious, credible, and realistic solution to this regional dispute.
For her part, Kenza El Ghali expressed her deep gratitude for this honor, stating that this decoration is for her “a source of pride as Ambassador of His Majesty the King and as a representative of Moroccan women.”
In turn, Rector of the University of Chile Rosa Devés Alessandri emphasized that Kenza El Ghali embodies a constant commitment to dialogue between peoples and human dignity.
She recalled that, upon her arrival in Chile, the Moroccan diplomat undertook the translation into Arabic of major works of Chilean poetry, notably those of Nobel Prize winners Pablo Neruda and Gabriela Mistral.
In addition to former President Eduardo Frei, the ceremony was attended by Minister of Culture Carolina Arredondo Marzan, Minister of Public Works Jessica Lopez Saffie, Minister of Health Ximena Aguilera, Minister of Sports Jaime Pizarro, former Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonia Urrejola, Mayor of Coquimbo Ali Manouchehri, and Director General of the Carabineros de Chile Marcelo Araya.
