UN–Sahara: Gabon Reaffirms Support for Morocco’s Autonomy Initiative

Gabon reaffirmed on Tuesday in New York its support for Morocco’s Autonomy Initiative, describing it as a “serious, credible and constructive basis” for reaching a definitive settlement to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.

“This initiative is consistent with international law and the resolutions of the Security Council, and enjoys growing support within the international community,” stated Lia Bouanga, Adviser at Gabon’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations.

Speaking before the members of the Fourth Committee of the UN General Assembly, the Gabonese diplomat also commended Morocco’s efforts to promote the economic and social development of its southern provinces, particularly in the fields of infrastructure and local governance.

“These investments reflect Morocco’s commitment to inclusive development and to improving the well-being of the populations of its southern provinces,” she affirmed.

Ms. Bouanga further emphasized that resolving this regional dispute “will make a significant contribution to regional stability and integration,” noting that Morocco is a “key partner in this dynamic.”

She also recalled Gabon’s decision to open a Consulate General in the Moroccan Sahara.

On this occasion, the Gabonese diplomat reiterated her country’s support for the political process conducted under the auspices of the UN Secretary-General and facilitated by his Personal Envoy for the Moroccan Sahara, in accordance with the relevant Security Council resolutions.
