Morocco, a pillar of the international fight against Islamist terrorism, according to French magazine VSD
Morocco has now established itself as a major player in the global fight against terrorism, according to an in-depth investigation published by the French magazine VSD in its issue No. 2218, under the title: “International Islamist Terrorism: Morocco on the Front Line.” The report highlights the central role played by the Kingdom in combating transnational terrorism, thanks to an integrated security strategy combining intelligence, international cooperation and technological innovation.

Based on precise data and testimonies collected on the ground, the investigation underlines the significant evolution of Morocco’s security apparatus over the past decade. The General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance (DGST) is described as a highly professional service that has succeeded in moving from a reactive approach to a strategy based on prevention and anticipation of threats.
The magazine recalls that over the past ten years, Morocco has dismantled more than one hundred terrorist cells, the majority of which were linked to the Daesh organisation and its networks operating between the Sahel region, Libya and the Euro-Mediterranean area. This outcome, the investigation specifies, is the result of sustained investments in human intelligence, digital analysis and information sharing with international partners.
The report also highlights the key role of the Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations (BCIJ), considered the operational arm in the dismantling of terrorist cells. Its interventions have become a benchmark in terms of speed of execution and precision, making it possible to prevent several attack scenarios that were in the preparation phase.
The investigation also devotes significant attention to the progress achieved by Morocco’s forensic and technical police. A Moroccan laboratory now occupies a strategic position within an Interpol working group. Equipped with cutting-edge technology in the fields of DNA, explosives analysis and digital evidence processing, this laboratory makes Morocco a trusted partner in international investigations.
At the strategic level, VSD underlines that Morocco’s commitment to combating terrorism is part of a comprehensive vision driven by King Mohammed VI. This approach is not limited to security action alone, but also includes the fight against extremism through religious supervision, reintegration programmes for detainees convicted of terrorism, and action against financing and recruitment networks.
The report also stresses the importance of international cooperation, which has become a cornerstone of Morocco’s strategy. Moroccan services work closely with several European and American countries in the exchange of sensitive information, thereby contributing to the disruption of terrorist plots beyond Morocco’s borders.
In conclusion, the investigation considers that Morocco is no longer merely a country exposed to the terrorist threat, but a key player in international security and an advanced bulwark against jihadist threats in North Africa and the Sahel region. This recognition reflects the growing effectiveness of the Moroccan security model and its ability to adapt to a constantly evolving threat.
The report thus places Morocco among the countries most actively engaged in the fight against terrorism, not through rhetoric, but through concrete results, operational partnerships and security action recognised at the international level.
