Morocco–Senegal: The Strength of a Relationship Stronger Than the Passing Tensions of an AFCON Final
After the turbulence triggered by the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, relations between Morocco and Senegal are set to quickly return to their natural climate of trust, respect and fraternity. The tensions observed in the hours following the match, largely amplified on social media, were only a passing episode in a bilateral relationship deeply rooted in history and shared interests.

The holding in Rabat, on January 26 and 27, of the 15th session of the High Joint Commission for Moroccan-Senegalese Cooperation clearly illustrates this shared desire to turn the page and look toward the future. This high-level meeting is part of a dynamic aimed at consolidating the strategic partnership between the two countries and strengthening cooperation in several key areas.
The diplomatic signals exchanged in the days following the final largely helped to calm tensions. They made it possible to place sporting events back in their natural context, that of competition and emotion, without attributing to them a political or diplomatic dimension they cannot bear. The message was clear: a football match, however important it may be, cannot alter or call into question relations built on decades of trust, human closeness and strategic convergence.
Admittedly, the final was marked by disputed behavior that generated incomprehension and frustration within Moroccan public opinion, fueling a sense of injustice among many supporters. But this reaction, driven by the emotion of the moment, quickly gave way to a more lucid and calm reading of the situation. The maturity of institutions and political wisdom played a decisive role in containing excesses and preventing any escalation.
Attempts by certain actors to exploit this sporting episode in order to stir tensions or weaken ties between Rabat and Dakar ran up against an undeniable reality: Moroccan-Senegalese relations rest on foundations far deeper than a sporting result. They are anchored in a shared history, strong spiritual and cultural ties, as well as sustained political and institutional cooperation.
Ultimately, this episode mainly highlighted the resilience and maturity of relations between the two countries. The organization of the Joint Commission in the immediate aftermath of the final is the clearest proof of this. Far from dividing, this sporting event served as a reminder that Morocco and Senegal share a common vision based on dialogue, stability and the construction of a lasting partnership in the service of their peoples and the African continent.
