Moroccan Sahara: China Adopts a Pragmatic Stance and Moves Closer to Morocco’s Vision on the Autonomy Plan

The position of the People’s Republic of China on the question of the Moroccan Sahara is undergoing a notable evolution marked by pragmatism. A recent report by the Observatory of Chinese Policy highlights the growing importance of the Sino-Moroccan strategic partnership, characterized by a clear convergence around the defense of territorial integrity and the rejection of separatist movements.

This rapprochement builds on a historic relationship founded on mutual respect, state sovereignty, and non-interference. Beijing recognizes Morocco’s central role in Africa and the Arab world, favoring long-term, structured cooperation in fields such as industrial investment, economic corridors, energy projects, and the new digital and maritime Silk Roads. These dynamics give Morocco major strategic significance within China’s global vision.

On the multilateral stage, Chinese diplomacy stands out for its carefully balanced approach. China supports no action, declaration, or maneuver aimed at legitimizing the claims of the so-called “Polisario.” Its abstention during the UN Security Council vote on the resolution reaffirming the preeminence of Morocco’s Autonomy Plan was not a sign of ambiguity but rather a reflection of constructive diplomacy—one that seeks to avoid polarization while encouraging a realistic and lasting political solution.

Moreover, Beijing shares with Rabat a core principle: the preservation of territorial unity as an essential pillar of state stability. This shared value naturally places China among the nations that recognize the relevance and credibility of Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as the definitive solution to the regional dispute.

In a geopolitical context marked by instability and separatist manipulation, China thus emerges as a reliable, consistent, and predictable partner. Its position further isolates the Algerian military regime and its separatist allies, whose agendas are increasingly marginalized on the international scene.

Today, the Sino-Moroccan partnership is not only diplomatic but also strategic, structural, and future-oriented. It aligns with the royal vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, who has established Morocco as a sovereign, respected, and indispensable player in the emerging global balance. The cooperation continues to expand and deepen—and with it, the international recognition of the Moroccan Sahara, clear and irreversible.
