Morocco Reiterates in Vienna Strong Support for IAEA’s Central Role
Vienna - Morocco's Permanent Representative to Vienna, Ambassador Azzeddine Farhane, reiterated Morocco's strong commitment to supporting the central role of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and sharing its expertise in the field of nuclear applications, particularly with African member States.

“The Kingdom of Morocco reiterates its commitment to supporting the central role of the IAEA and remains determined to take action, in full cooperation with the IAEA, to bolster national capacities and share expertise in the field of nuclear applications, particularly in partnership with African member states,” Farhane said, speaking at a meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors under agenda item 4: Strengthening the Agency’s activities related to nuclear science, technology, and applications.
“Hundreds of African experts have participated this year in Morocco in scientific visits, fellowships, workshops, and university degree programs,” the Ambassador recalled.
In 2024, Morocco also organized capacity-building activities for experts from over 40 IAEA member states in Africa, he continued.
In this regard, the Kingdom reiterates its support for the implementation of the Rays of Hope initiative, particularly in Africa, he said, noting that Morocco’s National Institute of Oncology, designated as an Anchor Center under this initiative, has already begun to host trainees, particularly from African member states.
The Institute, which works to share its expertise through regional courses and workshops in partnership with the IAEA, is also ready to undertake expert missions to assist other centers at their request.
Regarding the ZODIAC initiative, Morocco’s National Center for Scientific and Technical Research, named a Collaborating Center, held the first Regional Meeting on the Implementation of ZODIAC in Africa last November, Farhane added.
This first meeting, attended by 31 African member states, adopted a roadmap tor reinforce the collaborative approach, coordination measures, and synergies between African ZODIAC laboratories, he emphasized.
Over the past year, Morocco has furthered efforts to strengthen South-South cooperation, particularly with Africa, through promoting the safe use of nuclear techniques.
In this context, the Ambassador called for increased financial support for the IAEA’s Technical Cooperation Program in order to support the skills of national experts in the fields of nuclear science, technology and applications.
“Morocco reiterates ongoing commitment to sharing its experience with African countries, both bilaterally or in cooperation with the IAEA, with the purpose of promoting scientific research and the peaceful use of nuclear science, technology and applications,” Farhane concluded.
