Morocco Makes History: AS FAR and RS Berkane Reach CAF Champions League Semi-Finals

It was a historic Sunday for Moroccan football. In the space of 24 hours, two clubs from the Kingdom secured their places in the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League, confirming a continental dominance that is no longer occasional, but structural.

Renaissance Sportive de Berkane eliminated Sudan’s Al Hilal in Kigali on Sunday, joining AS FAR, who had delivered a major statement the day before by knocking out defending champions Pyramids FC in Cairo. For Berkane, this marks a historic first, as the club reaches the semi-finals of Africa’s premier competition for the first time in its history.

The semi-final lineup now takes on an unprecedented shape: AS FAR and RS Berkane will face each other, guaranteeing Morocco a place in the final.

These achievements are far from accidental. Moroccan football has moved beyond being a surprise contender to establishing itself, through consistency and quality of play, as a benchmark on the continental stage.

At club level, the trajectory is clear. RS Berkane, winners of the CAF Confederation Cup in 2020 and 2022, continue to assert themselves as one of the most formidable teams in Africa, capable of competing with historic powerhouses. AS FAR, for their part, have demonstrated through their consistency and squad depth that Moroccan club football operates at a high and sustainable level.

As the 2030 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by Spain and Portugal, approaches, and with the national team leading African rankings, Morocco is no longer content with simply competing. It is setting the standard.
