CAF suspends Pape Thiaw after controversial conduct during AFCON 2025 final
The Confederation of African Football has suspended Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw following a series of incidents that marred the AFCON 2025 final against Morocco, a match that ended in controversy despite Senegal’s eventual triumph.

Tensions surrounding the final had already been building before kick-off. In the days leading up to the match, Pape Thiaw publicly criticized Morocco’s organization of the tournament, comments that drew attention given the importance and sensitivity of the final.
The decisive turning point came during stoppage time of the second half, when Morocco were awarded a penalty in a moment that could have determined the outcome of the entire competition. Immediately after the referee’s decision, Senegalese players left the pitch in protest, halting the match for nearly 30 minutes and creating a situation of confusion and disruption at a critical stage of the final.
When play eventually resumed, Morocco prepared to take the penalty, with Brahim Díaz designated as the shooter. However, further delays followed, as Senegal goalkeeper Édouard Mendy repeatedly stalled before the kick could be taken. The prolonged interruptions broke the rhythm of the moment, and Díaz ultimately failed to convert the penalty.
Senegal would go on to win the tournament, but the sequence of events surrounding the penalty decision cast a shadow over the final. CAF’s disciplinary bodies reviewed the incidents and subsequently decided to suspend Pape Thiaw, holding him responsible for conduct deemed incompatible with the principles of fair play and respect for competition rules.
The duration of the suspension has not yet been communicated, and CAF has not ruled out further disciplinary measures. The decision reflects the governing body’s stated intention to protect the integrity of African football and ensure that decisive moments in major tournaments are not undermined by unsportsmanlike behaviour.
Further clarification from CAF is expected in the coming days as the African football community continues to debate one of the most contentious finals in recent AFCON history.
