Washington Delivers a Diplomatic Blow to Algiers: The United States Reaffirms Morocco’s Full Sovereignty Over Its Sahara
The house of cards built by Algeria’s military regime has once again collapsed. In a strong statement given to the Moroccan outlet Assahifa (English version), a senior U.S. State Department official confirmed that the United States reaffirms its recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara, while considering the Moroccan Autonomy Plan as the only credible, serious, and realistic framework for reaching a just and lasting political solution to the regional dispute.

According to the same official, Secretary of State Marco Rubio clearly stated that “the United States recognizes Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara and supports the Kingdom’s autonomy proposal as the only basis for a definitive settlement.”
He further renewed former President Donald Trump’s call urging the concerned parties to engage without delay in constructive dialogue based on the Moroccan initiative, while noting that Washington stands ready to help facilitate progress toward this goal.
A stinging rebuke to Algiers and its Polisario proxy
This statement comes as the United States, in its capacity as penholder of the Sahara file at the United Nations Security Council, submitted a new draft resolution on October 22, 2025, explicitly reaffirming Washington’s support for the autonomy plan under Moroccan sovereignty. This move has triggered a diplomatic meltdown in Algiers, where the generals, caught off guard, are struggling to conceal their anxiety.
The American draft, discussed behind closed doors at the Security Council on October 23 and 24, calls on the parties to engage in direct negotiations without preconditions, while extending the mandate of MINURSO until January 31, 2026.
This pragmatic approach effectively buries the fantasy of an unachievable referendum and the illusion of a fictitious independence that Algeria’s military regime continues to wave before its domestic audience.
In response, the Polisario Front, a puppet of Algiers, released an angry statement rejecting the U.S. draft “in its entirety” and threatening to boycott any political process. In a letter addressed to the President of the Security Council, Sidi Mohamed Ammar, the movement’s representative to MINURSO, went as far as calling the American text “dangerous and contrary to international law,” a bitter irony coming from an illegitimate entity with no legal or representative basis.
Behind this show of outrage lies the real panic of Algeria’s ruling junta: diplomatically isolated, economically weakened and plagued by shortages and internal scandals, the regime sees its last card—the Sahara issue—crumbling before its eyes.
Washington closes the chapter: The Moroccan Autonomy Plan as the only reference
The American message could not be clearer. The Autonomy Plan proposed by Morocco in 2007 remains the only basis for negotiation. Gone are the ideological manipulations and false hopes maintained by the Algerian regime. The international community is now moving forward along the path of realism and respect for the sovereignty of the Kingdom of Morocco, under the enlightened leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.
This new and firm stance, consistent with the historic proclamation of December 2020, confirms the strength of the Moroccan-American strategic partnership and exposes the total isolation of the Algerian regime, trapped by its own propaganda.
Morocco’s Sahara is now more than ever recognized as such by the world’s major powers. While Algiers sinks deeper into denial and impotence, Rabat continues to advance with legitimacy and confidence toward peace, development and regional stability.
