Agadir Welcomes the President of the Canary Islands to Strengthen Partnership with the Souss-Massa Region
The Souss-Massa region is taking a new step forward in strengthening its international cooperation with the reception, this Monday in Agadir, of the President of the Government of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, on an official two-day visit on January 26 and 27. This mission marks a turning point in the development of institutional, economic and sectoral relations between the two territories.

Leading a broad delegation including institutional officials, economic actors, as well as representatives of the scientific and academic community, the Canarian president was received by the Wali of the Souss-Massa region, Saïd Amzazi, and the President of the Regional Council, Karim Achengli, during an official ceremony. The Ambassador of Spain to Morocco, Enrique Ojeda Vila, was also present, reflecting the importance attached to this dynamic of rapprochement between Morocco and Spain.
At the heart of this visit is the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Souss-Massa region and the Government of the Canary Islands, accompanied by four sectoral cooperation agreements aimed at consolidating economic, commercial, academic and social ties. These agreements will respectively focus on cooperation between business confederations, chambers of commerce, innovation and universities, as well as the development of exchanges in the field of sport.
The scheduled meetings will allow the Canarian representatives to discover the economic potential of the Souss-Massa region, particularly in high-potential sectors, while the island delegation will present the assets and capacities of the Canary Islands as a strategic regional platform.
Speaking ahead of his trip, Fernando Clavijo stressed the importance of openness and regional partnership, stating that “isolationism would be detrimental to the Canary Islands and would constitute an imprudent approach.” He emphasized his government’s desire to play an active role in its geographical environment, both to contribute and to benefit from exchanges and shared experiences.
For its part, the Spanish government presidency indicated that this visit falls within the framework of the Canary Islands–Africa Strategy, aimed at sustaining the contacts established in recent months with Moroccan regional authorities. The objective is to translate this cooperation into concrete projects in strategic sectors, based on a joint program founded on good neighborliness, sustainable economic development and the sharing of expertise.
This visit illustrates the shared determination of both regions to build a pragmatic and balanced partnership, serving growth, innovation and regional stability.
