UN: Morocco Concludes Its Presidency of the Conference on the Establishment of a Zone Free of Weapons of Mass Destruction in the Middle East
Morocco, represented by its ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations, Omar Hilale, successfully concluded its Presidency of the sixth session of the Conference on the Establishment of a Nuclear Weapon Free Zone and Other Weapons of Mass Destruction in the Middle East, held from November 17 to 21 in New York.

In his closing remarks, Mr. Hilale welcomed the adoption by acclamation of the Conference’s final report, noting that “when political will meets shared vision, the impossible becomes possible.”
“Together, we transformed aspirations into concrete actions, debates into decisions, and disagreements into convergences bearing hope,” he stated, adding that this session will be remembered as a moment when the Middle East chose the path of dialogue, cooperation and peacemaking.
The ambassador also stressed that the path toward a zone free of nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East “is indeed filled with obstacles, but every step we take together brings us closer to a future where security will no longer rely on nuclear deterrence, but on mutual trust and respect for international law.”
He further emphasized the “vital” commitment of nuclear armed states and the international community to achieving this vision of a Middle East free of such weapons.
This international conference took place amid a complex geopolitical context, marked by recent developments in the Middle East, particularly over the past six months.
On this occasion, member states unanimously praised Morocco’s remarkable engagement throughout the year, highlighting its innovative approach and its ability to give new impetus to the Conference and strengthen its international visibility.
In their final report, participating states underlined that in the face of the alarming deterioration of global security, confidence building measures and nuclear risk reduction mechanisms, however commendable, cannot replace actual, complete, verifiable and irreversible nuclear disarmament.
Reaffirming their commitment to action, they pledged to continue rigorously implementing the objectives of the global disarmament and non proliferation framework, while reinforcing synergies between nuclear weapon free zones and the Middle East Conference.
At the closing of the session, members of the Conference elected by acclamation the Sultanate of Oman as President of the seventh session of the Conference on the Establishment of a Nuclear Weapon Free Zone and Other Weapons of Mass Destruction in the Middle East, scheduled to take place in November 2026 in New York.
