Death of filmmaker Mohamed Ahd Bensouda
The Moroccan film world is in mourning. Filmmaker and screenwriter Mohamed Ahd Bensouda passed away on the night of Tuesday, February 3, 2026, at the age of 56, leaving behind a remarkable career. News of his death was shared by film critic Abdelilah ElJouahary.

Born in Tetouan on July 17, 1969, Mohamed Ahd Bensouda was passionate about the seventh art and a strong advocate of an ambitious Moroccan cinema, driven by an authentic sensibility and a committed view of society.
After studying history and French literature at the Faculty of Letters in Fez, the filmmaker moved to France to pursue professional training in directing. His films, such as Le Prix de l’insouciance, Mawssim Lamchaoucha and L’Ombre du loup, earned him recognition both in Morocco and internationally. Working with a wide range of Moroccan actors, he won numerous awards on the national and international artistic scene.
His works often explored themes combining tradition and modernity, allowing audiences, both local and international, to discover a rich and nuanced facet of Moroccan culture.
Known for his commitment to women’s rights in Morocco, Ahd Bensouda directed the 2023 film “Les Divorcés de Casablanca”, which highlighted the suffering of divorced women in Morocco.
With the passing of Mohamed Ahd Bensouda, an important chapter in the history of Moroccan cinema comes to a close.
