Mehdi Bensaid: The Draft Law Reforming the CNP Aims to Strengthen the Council’s Powers and Legal Capacity
The primary objective of the draft law reforming the National Press Council (CNP) is to strengthen the institution’s powers and legal capacity, stated the Minister of Youth, Culture and Communication, Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid, on Monday at the House of Representatives.

Responding to an oral question from the Justice and Development Group regarding “the outcome of the work carried out by the interim commission responsible for managing press and publishing affairs,” Mr. Bensaid explained that the draft law introduces for the first time the creation of an “Election Supervision Commission.” This body will rule on all matters related to electoral and appointment procedures, with the aim of “resolving all previously encountered issues.”
He added that work is currently focused on finalizing the ratification process of the draft law before moving to the stage of the next elections, emphasizing that only media professionals are entitled to elect their representatives in the upcoming phase.
Mr. Bensaid also stressed that the role of the government is to strengthen the Council’s legal framework so it can exercise its authority independently. He added that the draft law grants the right to any party to challenge any decision taken within the institution.
