Morocco Donates Support to Mauritania in Fight Against Desert Locusts
Nouakchott - A donation from the Kingdom of Morocco was handed over on Monday in the suburbs of Mauritania’s capital, Nouakchott, to support the country’s efforts to combat the desert locust plague, which threatens agricultural and pastoral resources.

This donation of 100,000 liters of pesticides reflects the depth of fraternal and cooperative relations between Morocco and the Islamic Republic of Mauritania across various sectors.
It also continues the close and ongoing collaboration between national centers specialized in locust control in Morocco and Mauritania, manifested through technical support and the exchange of expertise at the bilateral level or in coordination with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) via the Commission for Controlling the Desert Locust in the Western Region (CLCPRO).
The donation was handed over at one of the premises of the Mauritanian Locust Control Center, in the presence of representatives from the Moroccan embassy in Nouakchott, officials from the Mauritanian Ministry of Agriculture, a FAO representative, and the director of Mauritania’s National Desert Locust Control Center.
In a statement to MAP, Mohamed Lamine Hamouni, Executive Secretary of CLCPRO, praised “Morocco’s swift and high-quality response” to the request for assistance from the Mauritanian authorities, noting that “a shipment of pesticides was sent in a timely manner and in sufficient quantity.”
He emphasized that this generous support and Morocco’s notable efforts will enable Mauritania to eradicate the plague or at least reduce its impact, highlighting that desert locusts pose a cross-border threat, which underscores the importance of cooperation and strengthening efforts to eliminate breeding sites.
For his part, Mohamed Yahya Mohamed Mahmoud, Acting Secretary General of the Mauritanian Ministry of Agriculture, lauded Morocco’s highly significant support in contributing to Mauritania’s fight against the desert locust plague, which threatens both the environment and food security. He also noted that this assistance demonstrates the cooperation linking the two countries at all levels, serving integrated development and regional integration.
