United States Reaffirms Support for a Political Solution Based on Morocco’s Autonomy Initiative for the Sahara

The United States has once again reaffirmed the clarity and consistency of its position on the issue of the Moroccan Sahara. Massad Boulos, Senior Advisor to the US President for Arab and African Affairs, stressed that Washington, under the administration of President Donald Trump, remains fully committed to a just, lasting and realistic political solution capable of definitively ending this regional dispute.

This official position was expressed through a post on the X platform, in which the senior US official welcomed the leading role played by the United States in sponsoring the consultations recently held in Madrid, under American and United Nations co-sponsorship, and with the participation of all concerned parties.

According to Massad Boulos, these meetings are part of a diplomatic dynamic aimed at giving decisive momentum to the political process, with the objective of consolidating regional stability and opening concrete prospects for peace, development and cooperation for the benefit of the peoples of the Maghreb and the Sahel-Saharan region. He stressed that the United States will continue to support “all serious and credible initiatives” intended to bring this issue to a close.

In previous statements, the American advisor had already recalled that Washington’s position on the Sahara is unequivocal. The United States considers the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative, proposed by the Kingdom in 2007, to be the only realistic, pragmatic and sustainable political framework for achieving a definitive solution, in full respect of Morocco’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

This approach, supported by a growing number of countries around the world, is fully in line with successive resolutions of the United Nations Security Council, which have gradually set aside unrealistic options in favor of a negotiated political solution. Resolution 2797, adopted in October 2025, clearly enshrined the Moroccan initiative as the sole basis for any credible settlement.

For his part, the spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, Stephane Dujarric, adopted a reserved stance regarding the precise content of the Madrid consultations, indicating that any official information would be communicated in due course through the appropriate institutional channels.

It should be recalled that these consultations, held at the United States Embassy in Madrid, brought together Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania and the Polisario, under the supervision of senior American and United Nations officials, as part of the direct follow-up to Resolution 2797.

Through this diplomatic sequence, Morocco’s leadership, the relevance of its autonomy initiative and the solidity of its strategic alliances appear more than ever as the pillars of a lasting solution, in line with international law, realities on the ground and the legitimate aspirations of the populations of the Southern Provinces.
