African Lion 2026: Morocco at the heart of global military innovation as Agadir becomes the testing ground for future defense technologies

The city of Agadir is preparing to become, next spring, one of the world’s main laboratories for military innovation. The 2026 edition of the African Lion exercise marks a decisive turning point by placing emerging defense technologies and operational innovation at the center of its priorities, according to the US Army.

Meeting in Agadir last December as part of the Mid Planning Event (MPE) for African Lion 2026, military planners, government officials and representatives of the defense industry from several countries devoted an entire week to refining what is expected to be one of the most advanced editions of the exercise in nearly two decades, reports the official Army.mil website.

At the core of this edition is a large-scale command and control exercise designed to test the ability of the U.S. Army Southern European Task Force, Africa (SETAF-AF) to lead a Combined Joint Task Force (CJTF). The objective is clear: to test, under near-real conditions, interoperability between U.S., Moroccan and partner forces in order to strengthen multinational coordination in the face of regional and global security challenges.

But African Lion 2026 goes beyond the purely tactical dimension. The exercise takes a major step forward with the creation, for the first time, of a multi-vendor experimentation and innovation hub. This unprecedented platform will allow artificial intelligence, advanced command systems and other disruptive technologies to be integrated into a multinational command center, directly linking deployed units in the field with strategic decision-making levels.

These experiments in a real operational environment are expected to generate valuable data to improve reaction capabilities, anticipate hybrid threats and adapt military doctrines to the conflicts of tomorrow. They will also give the Moroccan Armed Forces and their allies a unique opportunity to become familiar with these cutting-edge technologies and to incorporate the lessons learned into their training programs.

Quoted by Army.mil, Seth Henderson, the exercise’s chief planner, stressed that “African Lion 2026 was designed to concretely integrate technological innovation into multinational operations under real conditions.” In the same vein, Lieutenant Colonel Nick Dubaz, head of SETAF-AF’s TRIAD Innovation Cell, stated that the mission is to “rapidly identify the most effective technologies and deploy them efficiently to confront current and future threats, in Africa and elsewhere.”

Beyond the technological aspect, this edition confirms the strength of the strategic partnership between Morocco and the United States, the backbone of African Lion for nearly twenty years. More than 250 participants worked on finalizing the scenarios and logistics of an exercise that will mobilize several thousand troops in the spring. For the Kingdom, the event is both a tool to strengthen national capabilities and a platform for exchanging expertise with partner forces.

African Lion now goes beyond the traditional framework of military training to establish itself as a true incubator of strategic innovation, placing Morocco at the heart of allied military planning and preparation for next-generation conflicts. This evolution confirms the Kingdom’s central role in the regional and international security architecture.
