UNESCO and “Morocco 2030 Foundation” Join Forces to Boost the Lasting Impact of Major Sporting Events

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the “Morocco 2030 Foundation” signed a partnership agreement on Tuesday in Rabat, establishing a cooperation framework for the 2025–2030 period aimed at making sport a driver of education, inclusion, and social cohesion.

According to a statement from UNESCO, this initiative aligns with Morocco’s national momentum as the Kingdom prepares to host several major sporting events, including the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, the U17 Women’s World Cup (2025–2029), and the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

This marks the first agreement signed by the “Morocco 2030 Foundation” dedicated to the social and educational dimensions of sport, representing a significant milestone in its commitment to sustainable territorial development.

UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay stated on this occasion:

“Together with the Morocco 2030 Foundation, we are making sport a vehicle for education and inclusion. Thanks to initiatives like this, the momentum created by the major events hosted by the Kingdom will translate into lasting actions for the benefit of youth and local communities.”

For his part, the President of the “Morocco 2030 Foundation,” Fouzi Lekjaa, said:

“In line with the enlightened vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist Him, this partnership between the Morocco 2030 Foundation and UNESCO will strengthen the role of sport, and football in particular, as a tool for sustainable development and a vector of social inclusion.”

The first initiative to emerge from this agreement is the “From Stadiums to Territories: Sport as a Driver of Transformation” project, funded by UNESCO and implemented in cooperation with the “Morocco 2030 Foundation.”

This program aims to embed the social legacy of the 2025 AFCON around three main pillars:

  • Community tournaments titled “Africa Cup of Citizenship”
  • A national campaign themed “The Values of Sport”
  • A festival called “Equality and Development Through Sport”, featuring a special focus on girls and women

As the lead United Nations agency for sport and physical education, UNESCO will support the “Morocco 2030 Foundation” in implementing an innovative model that connects sport, education, and sustainable development.

Through this partnership, UNESCO and the “Morocco 2030 Foundation” reaffirm their shared commitment to making the values of sport a genuine instrument of solidarity, education, and sustainable progress for youth and local communities.
