National Strike by Teacher-Researchers: Public Universities Under Strain

Teacher-researchers at public higher education institutions are observing a national strike on March 3 and 4, following a call by the National Union of Higher Education (SNESup). This mobilization comes amid heightened tensions surrounding draft law No. 59.24 on the reform of higher education and scientific research.

The movement is part of a progressive mobilization program scheduled throughout the month of March. Teacher-researchers mainly denounce the lack of consultation in the drafting of the reform bill, which they view as a challenge to the achievements of the public university. The union maintains that representatives of the academic body were sidelined during the discussion process.

Beyond the suspension of classes, the strike call also includes the boycott of several pedagogical, scientific and administrative activities, as well as non-participation in institutional meetings. The aim is to increase pressure on the authorities in order to secure a revision of the draft law and the opening of a genuine dialogue with sector representatives.

At the same time, several professional demands are being put forward, notably the generalization of nine years of notional seniority and the exemption of scientific research from taxation. Teacher-researchers are also calling on the ministry to provide clear commitments accompanied by a precise timetable to address their expectations.

This mobilization could disrupt the normal functioning of many universities, particularly the conduct of classes and research activities. It comes at a time when the reform of higher education is already fueling a national debate on the future of the public university, its autonomy and the working conditions of teacher-researchers.
