Tinghir Province: Inauguration of a Space for the Historical Memory of the Resistance and Liberation

A space dedicated to the historical memory of the resistance and liberation was inaugurated on Wednesday in Iknioune, in the province of Tinghir.

Built on an area of more than 500 square meters over two levels, this space required a total investment of more than 1.8 million dirhams (MAD). This facility was completed within the framework of a partnership between the High Commission for Former Resistance Members and Former Members of the Liberation Army, which provided the equipment for this space (394,169 dirhams), the Drâa-Tafilalet Regional Council, which allocated a budget of 1,500,000 dirhams, and the Iknioune Municipal Council (300,000 dirhams).

This space includes a library, a reading room containing books and publications dealing with the history of contemporary Morocco in general and the history of resistance against colonial presence in the region, as well as a museum area displaying historical documents, manuscripts, photographs and objects used during the period of the national struggle and resistance.

This facility also has a multimedia room, a training and skills development room for young people, in addition to a conference hall.

In a statement to the press, the High Commissioner for Former Resistance Members and Former Members of the Liberation Army, Mustapha El Ktiri, said that this space, which aims to preserve national memory and highlight the sacrifices made by the region’s inhabitants in the struggle for independence and freedom, is part of 108 spaces dedicated to the historical memory of the resistance and liberation created across all regions of the Kingdom.

This space, he said, was established in a region that was the scene of heroic battles fought in the 1930s by the Ait Atta tribes against the colonizer.

Moreover, Mr. El Ktiri and the accompanying delegation visited the historic military barracks built in 1933 in Iknioune, which is benefiting from major rehabilitation works.

It should be noted that the first phase of the rehabilitation of this historic site required a budget of 250,000 dirhams, fully financed by the National Initiative for Human Development (INDH).

The inauguration ceremony of this space dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the heritage of the national resistance was attended in particular by the Governor of the province of Tinghir, Ismail Haikal, the President of the Drâa-Tafilalet Regional Council, Hro Abrou, elected officials and several civilian and military figures.
