Constitutional Court Decision: The National Association of Media and Publishers (ANME) Denounces a Political Blockage of the Press Sector

The National Association of Media and Publishers (ANME) announces that it welcomes and commends the decision of the Constitutional Court, which has restored the principles of legality and constitutional legitimacy, while reaffirming respect for the rules governing professional institutions and the self-regulation of the press and publishing sector.

Alongside this responsible constitutional decision, the Association notes with deep concern the selective approach adopted by certain political actors, who chose to refer only the law governing the National Press Council to the Constitutional Court, while overlooking other legislative texts of major importance and with a profound impact on public life.

This double standard cannot be separated from narrow political calculations driven by far from innocent motives. In practice, it has led to the paralysis of the sector’s institutional process, caused direct harm to journalists and media organizations, and emptied self-regulation of its substance, particularly with regard to the professional timetable.

The Association, in its capacity as the most representative framework—bringing together the largest media institutions and the broadest base of professional journalists—affirms that this manipulation of the sector’s timeline has resulted in:

  • An unjustified suspension of the issuance of professional press cards and railway transport cards;

  • The non-payment of salaries of National Press Council employees for more than three months;

  • The blockage of all pathways leading to the signing of collective bargaining agreements aimed at improving the wages of journalists and other employees of media companies.

In view of this alarming situation, the Association announces that it will convene a meeting of all its members next week to assess the current phase and take the appropriate decisions in defense of the independence of the profession, the stability of media enterprises, and the rights of their employees.

The Association reiterates that the press is not a battleground for political score-settling, and that respecting it means respecting the Constitution and society’s right to professional and responsible information.

The message is clear: The press is not a bargaining chip. It is not a testing ground for political experiments. And those who manipulate it for obscure purposes bear full responsibility before History and public opinion.
