Walid Regragui Honored in Rabat as FRMF Announces End of His Tenure and Appoints Mohamed Ouahbi

On Thursday evening, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation organized an exceptional press conference in Rabat marked by emotion and recognition. Titled “Tribute Ceremony to Mr. Walid Regragui,” the solemn event officially marked the end of Walid Regragui’s tenure as head coach of the national team and the opening of a new chapter with the appointment of Mohamed Ouahbi as the new coach of the Atlas Lions.

In front of an audience of journalists, officials, and former international players, the evening paid tribute to the coach who wrote one of the greatest chapters in the history of Moroccan football. Under his leadership, Morocco reached a historic milestone, establishing itself among the major nations of world football.

Speaking with emotion, Walid Regragui emphasized the pride and sense of responsibility that guided his journey at the helm of the national team.

“We entered the world’s Top 8, it is historic, and I am convinced that we will do even better in the future,” he said, receiving long applause.

In a speech marked by sincerity, the former head coach also highlighted the total commitment that defined his time leading the Atlas Lions.

“I have never compromised on the level of dedication and seriousness that this team deserves,” he stated, before recalling his deep attachment to the national jersey.

Walid Regragui also reflected on his experience with the Atlas Lions before explaining his decision to step down:

“The attachment that binds me to this team is not new. I have had the chance to experience intense emotions, both as a coach, a player, and also as an assistant. I have gone through all the stages. I took over a group with great potential three months before the World Cup with the objective of helping this team grow and instilling a winning culture. What is certain is that I gave the best of myself, which allowed us to reach historic heights (World Cup semi-final, AFCON final after 20 years, and FIFA Top 10),” he said, before thanking King Mohammed VI and highlighting the King’s investments and strategic vision.

“Today the team needs a new perspective. With clarity, and after reflection, I believe the national team needs a new breath. My decision to leave is a choice made for the good of our country and our football. I am leaving behind a strong and confident team that is not afraid to compete with the biggest nations,” he added before thanking the King, Fouzi Lekjaa, his staff, the players, and the supporters.

One of the highlights of the evening was the arrival on stage of the FRMF president, Fouzi Lekjaa, alongside Walid Regragui. Together, they symbolized the continuity of a sporting project that has enabled Moroccan football to reach a new level on the international stage.

President Lekjaa praised the work accomplished by Regragui, emphasizing his decisive role in Morocco’s progress and in strengthening the image of Moroccan football around the world.

The ceremony also marked the passing of the torch to Mohamed Ouahbi, who is expected to continue this momentum and guide the new generation of Atlas Lions.

Balancing recognition for the past with ambition for the future, the evening will remain a significant moment in the recent history of Moroccan football. Beyond the results and performances, Walid Regragui leaves behind the image of a passionate coach, a unifying leader, and a man deeply attached to Morocco’s colors.

His legacy will remain etched in the memory of supporters, while a new chapter now begins for the Atlas Lions.
