President of the Casablanca-Settat Regional Council, Abdellatif Maâzouz: 78 Billion Dirhams Mobilized in Morocco by 2029 to Modernize Public Transport
More than 78 billion dirhams have been mobilized in Morocco to develop a clean, modern, multimodal and accessible public transport system by 2029, announced the President of the Casablanca-Settat Regional Council, Abdellatif Maâzouz.

Among these investments, 11 billion dirhams are allocated to the acquisition of 3,750 new-generation buses, while 67 billion dirhams are dedicated to mass transit systems, including tramways, regional express trains (RER) and regional rail services, said Maâzouz during a side event held on the sidelines of COP30 in Belém, in the Brazilian Amazon, organized by the General Directorate of Local Authorities and the Moroccan Association of Presidents of Municipal Councils.
Highlighting the strategic role played by regions in the transition toward clean mobility within the framework of advanced regionalization, he noted that Casablanca-Settat has invested nearly 25 billion dirhams in mobility-related infrastructure and equipment for both urban and rural areas, representing approximately 40 percent of the budget of its updated Regional Development Plan.
According to him, the region is adopting an integrated model based on a clean-energy Train-Tramway system as the backbone, supported by the modernization of the bus network and a digital multimodal platform enabling intelligent flow management and real-time passenger information.
Speaking at the meeting held under the theme “Sustainable Mobility and Electrification of Public Transport: Current Status and Perspectives”, Maâzouz also emphasized that the expansion of the urban, peri-urban and rural road network has improved traffic fluidity and reduced emissions. Measurements recorded between 2023 and 2025 show a notable improvement in air quality in the region, based on data from monitoring stations installed across the territory.
By consolidating these dynamics, he observed, Morocco reaffirms its commitment to strengthening its leadership in sustainable development and sharing its expertise with African countries within the framework of South-South cooperation, particularly between regions and territorial entities.
He concluded that the Kingdom is accelerating the deployment of major sustainable mobility programs aligned with the National Sustainable Mobility Charter 2035 and the National Low-Carbon Strategy 2030, which aim to build inclusive, competitive and resilient territories.
