27th Anniversary of the Passing of the Late HM King Hassan II: Eternal Memory of a Visionary Monarch and Builder of Modern Morocco
On Thursday, October 2, 2025, corresponding to 09 Rabii II 1447 of the Hijri calendar, the Moroccan people bow with deep emotion and respect before the memory of the late His Majesty King Hassan II, on the occasion of the 27th anniversary of His passing. This solemn tribute reflects the gratitude of an entire Nation to an exceptional Sovereign whose political genius, foresight, and moral authority profoundly shaped Morocco’s contemporary history.

The Builder of National Unity
Since His accession to the throne in 1961, the late King faithfully pursued the work of His father, the Father of Independence, the late HM Mohammed V, elevating it to unprecedented heights. Under His reign, Morocco completed its territorial integrity with the recovery of Sidi Ifni in 1969, then Oued Eddahab in 1979, before inscribing His name forever in world history through the organization of the Green March on November 6, 1975. This peaceful and unprecedented epic, which led to the recovery of the Saharan provinces, remains a universal model of popular mobilization and peaceful conflict resolution.
The Genius of an Economic Visionary
Hassan II, a pioneer and strategist, quickly grasped the challenges of development. In 1966, He launched the dams policy, considered one of the most significant structural projects of His reign. Thanks to this vision, Morocco was able to secure its water resources, mitigate the effects of droughts, and make agriculture a key pillar of its economy. This bold and innovative choice continues to bear fruit today, attesting to the depth and relevance of His foresight.
A King Close to His People
Beyond infrastructure and the economy, Hassan II was a Sovereign deeply concerned with the well-being of His people. He initiated social reforms and worked for the promotion of women’s rights, the protection of the family, the dignity of citizens, and respect for political pluralism. His ability to combine tradition and modernity forged a solid and inclusive national identity, rooted in the values of solidarity, cohesion, and mutual support.
A Diplomat of Global Stature
On the international stage, the late Hassan II stood as a respected and influential leader. With undeniable charisma and exceptional political acumen, He positioned Morocco as a key player within international institutions and on major issues in the Arab, African, and Mediterranean arenas. A staunch defender of peace, dialogue, and South-South cooperation, He was also one of the leading advocates of Pan-Africanism, which earned Him, posthumously in 2022, a Pan-African Prize awarded by Ethiopia in recognition of His commitment to Africa and His role in the continent’s emancipation.
As Commander of the Faithful, Hassan II tirelessly defended the unity of the Islamic Ummah, advocating concord and solidarity in the face of contemporary challenges.
A Living Memory
Twenty-seven years after His passing, the figure of Hassan II remains alive in the collective consciousness of Moroccans. His reign, marked by courageous strategic choices and enlightened vision, laid the foundations of modern Morocco. This commemoration, coinciding with the fiftieth anniversary of the Green March, is a powerful reminder that His legacy continues to inspire and guide national action.
Today, under the leadership of His worthy successor, HM King Mohammed VI, may God assist Him, Morocco continues the path of modernization, development, and international influence initiated by Hassan II. In honoring His memory, the Moroccan people reaffirm their unwavering attachment to the Alaouite Throne and their determination to preserve the unity, stability, and greatness of the Kingdom.
