African Lion 2026: Enhanced Interoperability and Strategic Partnership Between Morocco and the United States Africa Command

Military cooperation between Morocco and the United States has entered a new phase of consolidation, highlighted by the latest activities carried out as part of African Lion 2026. Jointly organized by the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces and the United States Africa Command, the exercise remains one of the largest military events on the African continent.
One of the most notable moments of this edition was the joint flyover of an American B-52 strategic bomber alongside Moroccan F-16 fighter jets. More than a symbolic display, the operation reflected an advanced level of military interoperability, demonstrating the ability of both armed forces to operate together smoothly and effectively in complex operational environments.
At the same time, Morocco hosted its first-ever Joint Terminal Attack Controller (JTAC) training program, marking another key milestone in strengthening tactical capabilities. These specialists play a crucial role in coordinating airstrikes in support of ground troops, underscoring the growing expertise of Moroccan forces in modern military operations.
According to General Dagvin Anderson, commander of AFRICOM, the visible cooperation in Moroccan airspace sends a “credible deterrence message.” It also highlights the continued U.S. commitment to stability and security in North Africa and the Sahel region, where persistent security challenges remain.
Beyond military drills, this strategic partnership is rooted in a long-standing relationship between Rabat and Washington. It includes training, expertise-sharing and the development of joint capabilities to confront contemporary threats, particularly terrorism and regional crises.
African Lion 2026 once again confirms Morocco’s role as a key pillar of regional security and a trusted strategic partner of the United States in Africa.
