Italy: Giorgia Meloni Sets Two Clear Conditions for Recognizing the State of Palestine; The Release of Hostages and the Disarmament of Hamas
Amid international debates on the Palestinian question, Italy, under the leadership of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, has taken a firm and unequivocal stance. Rome has conditioned any recognition of a Palestinian state on two essential requirements: the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages held by Hamas, and the complete disarmament of the organization, designated as a terrorist group.

This declaration represents a break with the sometimes hesitant approach of several European capitals. Giorgia Meloni has outlined a political line that combines realism, firmness, and international responsibility, rejecting ideological pressures or superficial solutions that, in her view, provide neither security nor lasting peace in the Middle East.
Her position also reflects the spirit of former U.S. President Donald Trump, whose pragmatic vision of the conflict in the region was based on defending Israel’s security while encouraging historic normalization agreements such as the Abraham Accords. Both leaders share the conviction that no credible peace process can begin as long as organizations like Hamas maintain weapons and use terror as a political tool.
By setting these conditions, Italy is aligning itself with a renewed transatlantic dynamic, affirming its closeness to Washington and to moderate Arab states that reject extremism. Giorgia Meloni’s stance could even serve as a roadmap for the European Union by offering a clear guideline: recognition of a Palestinian state is possible, but only within a framework that ensures peace, security, and stability.
With the support of a strategic ally such as the United States under President Trump, this approach could become the foundation of a new Western diplomacy in the Middle East, one that is realistic, lucid, and directed toward genuine peace, far removed from ideological illusions.
