2nd DefSec Morocco Forum: Morocco Highlighted as a Key Geopolitical and Diplomatic Player

Moroccan and international experts emphasized on Tuesday in Rabat Morocco’s role as a pivotal geopolitical and diplomatic actor, driven by the enlightened Vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI.

Speaking at the opening of the second edition of the DefSec Morocco Forum, held on November 11 and 12, participants underscored that the Kingdom continues to strengthen its position as a reliable and strategic partner in promoting security at both regional and continental levels. This achievement, they noted, stems from Morocco’s pragmatic approach founded on the promotion of South-South cooperation, in line with the High Directives of the Sovereign.

Organized by the Global Governance & Sovereignty Foundation (GGSF), the forum provides a unique platform for reflection and strategic dialogue, aimed at deciphering security dynamics across the Atlantic region and identifying practical levers to enhance collective resilience and regional sovereignty.

In a statement to MAP, Ali Moutaib, President of the GGSF, explained that the goal of the forum is to create a “community of exchange” bringing together public and private stakeholders as well as academic and scientific actors to discuss security cooperation in Atlantic Africa, counterterrorism, economic security, and regional integration.

He further highlighted Morocco’s role as a “pivotal actor at both geopolitical and diplomatic levels”, noting the Kingdom’s substantial contribution to multidimensional development across the African continent.

For his part, Nizar Derdabi, an expert in international strategy, defense, and security, praised the initiative for convening experts, academics, practitioners, institutional representatives, and industry players to discuss ways to strengthen security cooperation among Atlantic African nations.

“The aim is to formulate recommendations based on concrete evidence and adapted to regional realities, in order to improve collective understanding of risks and develop joint responses,” he stated.

Held under the theme “The New Security Architecture of Atlantic Africa”, the forum brings together public decision-makers, international experts, academics, private-sector representatives, and field operators. It features three thematic panels on:

  • Sovereign defense industry: towards strategic autonomy for Morocco and Africa
  • Regional security: addressing asymmetric threats and fostering cooperation
  • Energy security: sovereignty, connectivity, and transnational regional stability

The two-day event also includes masterclasses and forward-looking sessions on defense industry development, energy connectivity, and transnational cooperation.
