Moroccan Sahara: Somalia Denies Attributed Statements and Clarifies Its Official Position

The communiqué recalls that any national position is conveyed exclusively through institutional channels. It also notes that Somalia has fully taken note of Security Council Resolution 2797, which now serves as a key reference in supporting the UN-led political process aimed at reaching a definitive settlement. According to Mogadishu, this resolution contributes to regional stability and opens the path toward a consensual solution.

Renewed Support for the UN Process

In its statement, the Somali Ministry of Foreign Affairs clearly reaffirms its alignment with the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy to revive the political dynamic surrounding the Sahara issue. It calls on all concerned parties to engage in serious, direct and constructive talks in good faith, with the aim of achieving a peaceful, lasting and mutually acceptable solution. This approach fully aligns with the vision advanced by Morocco within the United Nations framework.

A Strengthened Strategic Partnership with Morocco

Mogadishu also uses the opportunity to highlight an essential message: its intention to deepen cooperation with the Kingdom of Morocco, in full respect of the unity and sovereignty of States. This orientation confirms the growing political and diplomatic rapprochement between the two countries, supported by regular dialogue and converging positions on several regional matters.

This clarification comes only a few weeks after Somalia reiterated, on 18 November, its unequivocal support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and the Kingdom’s sovereignty over its entire territory, while welcoming the adoption of Resolution 2797 by the Security Council.

A Consistent Position Reaffirmed in Rabat

During his recent visit to Rabat, Somali Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdisalam Abdi Ali had already reiterated before Nasser Bourita his country’s firm and constant position in support of Morocco. In a joint statement issued after their meeting, the Somali Foreign Minister welcomed the adoption of Resolution 2797, which enshrines the Moroccan autonomy initiative, presented within the framework of the Kingdom’s sovereignty, as the most realistic and credible basis for reaching a lasting solution.

Abdisalam Abdi Ali had also praised Morocco’s serious efforts to bring an end to this artificial conflict, while reaffirming his country’s full support for the initiatives of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy.

Morocco Welcomes Somali Support

For his part, Nasser Bourita expressed the Kingdom’s gratitude to Somalia for its vote in favor of Resolution 2797, adopted on 31 October 2025. He also reaffirmed Morocco’s commitment to fully respect Somalia’s territorial unity and sovereignty over its entire territory.
