Nasser Bourita: Morocco Mobilized in Response to Any Racist Aggression Targeting Its Nationals in Spain
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, affirmed that Morocco responds in an immediate and coordinated manner to any racist aggression that may target its nationals residing in Spain, stressing the existence of close and constant cooperation with the Spanish authorities to ensure the protection of Moroccan citizens.
In a written reply to a question from parliamentary advisor Khalid Setti, a member of the National Union of Labour in Morocco (UNMT), the head of Moroccan diplomacy specified that the Kingdom’s diplomatic representations, foremost among them the Embassy of Morocco in Madrid, maintain continuous monitoring of the situation of Moroccans living in Spain. This mission is supported by an extensive consular network, allowing close follow-up and rapid intervention in the event of any incident.
Nasser Bourita indicated that the embassy systematically undertakes all necessary steps to defend the rights of the persons concerned, preserve their dignity and provide them with legal, administrative and human support throughout the required procedures. Consular and diplomatic services thus remain in direct contact with the competent local authorities, depending on the victims’ place of residence.
The minister stressed that the racist acts of violence recently recorded in certain Spanish cities do not reflect a general climate of hostility towards foreigners, nor a specific attitude towards the Moroccan community. According to him, such behavior stems from erroneous perceptions of the Other, fueled by disinformation and the rejection of the values of coexistence, openness and tolerance.
He also pointed to the responsibility of far-right discourse, which exploits the migration issue for electoral purposes by relying on rhetoric hostile to foreigners. Such discourse, he explained, particularly targets Moroccan citizens, exploiting stereotypes and preconceived ideas in order to fuel fear and influence public opinion.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he assured, takes charge of every racist incident and activates, when the situation so requires, mechanisms of consultation and bilateral coordination with host countries, with the aim of encouraging the adoption of preventive and deterrent measures against acts of hatred and racism.
In this context, the Embassy of Morocco in Madrid establishes direct contacts with officials from the various Spanish ministries as well as with regional authorities, in order to obtain updated official information, follow up on the actions taken to address reported incidents, prevent their recurrence and guarantee the safety of Moroccan nationals.
At the same time, diplomatic services work to deny and refute unfounded allegations that may circulate against the Moroccan community, which often concern other nationalities or relate to isolated facts that cannot be attributed to Moroccans as a whole living in Spain.
Finally, Nasser Bourita recalled the major contribution of the Moroccan community to the Spanish economy, highlighting its role as an essential driver of growth in foreign employment and the leading contributor to the social security system, thus confirming its integration and strategic importance within the country’s economic and social fabric.
