Death of Tarik Bouidar, aka “Rik”: Morocco Loses a Free-Spirited Caricaturist and an Iconic Satirical Voice

The Moroccan media landscape is in mourning. Caricaturist Tarik Bouidar, widely known by his pseudonym “Rik,” passed away this Friday due to a heart attack, leaving behind a remarkable body of work and an indelible mark on the national press.

A defining figure in Moroccan caricature, Rik had, over the years, established himself as a sharp observer of political, economic, and social developments. His daily cartoons in the newspaper L’Économiste became a highly anticipated fixture for readers, blending keen analysis, biting humor, and a razor-sharp sense of irony. Earlier in his career, he had collaborated with the weekly La Gazette du Maroc, where he honed his satirical style and affirmed his freedom of expression.

Beyond his professional achievements, Tarik Bouidar was a close friend of the Talal family, maintaining genuine bonds of friendship, particularly with Houcine Talal. Their relationship was marked by mutual respect, esteem, and a shared passion for journalism, culture, and freedom of expression.

The management of Le7tv, alongside the Talal family, expressed deep sorrow over this sudden loss and extended their heartfelt condolences to Bouidar’s family, friends, and the entire Moroccan press community. They honored the memory of a committed artist whose bold lines and critical perspective enriched public debate and kept the spirit of satire alive in Morocco.

Rik’s passing leaves an immense void in the worlds of caricature and journalism. His work—irreverent yet profoundly rooted in its time—will continue to testify to his talent and intellectual courage.

May God receive him in His mercy. To God we belong, and to Him we shall return.
