Judicial investigation opened into police officers and officials suspected of corruption at the Port of Tangier Ville
The National Brigade of the Judicial Police opened, on Thursday 29 January, a judicial investigation under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor in order to verify the criminal acts attributed to twenty four individuals, including six police officers, six officials from a local territorial surveillance unit, as well as two customs officers. These individuals are suspected of deliberately failing to fulfil their professional duties for the purposes of corruption, abuse of influence and participation in smuggling operations involving foreign goods.
The services of the General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance had previously provided precise information indicating the alleged involvement of certain officials in violations of procedures governing the control of goods transit at the Port of Tangier Ville. These practices reportedly involved the use of influence to allow certain individuals to bypass customs inspections in exchange for financial commissions considered acts of corruption.
The investigations carried out made it possible to identify several individuals who benefited from these alleged acts of collusion aimed at circumventing customs controls, as well as to determine the officials suspected of being involved in these offences and criminal acts.
All suspects have been subjected to judicial investigation procedures on the instructions of the public prosecutor in order to determine the extent of their involvement in the recorded offences. Investigations are continuing in order to identify all perpetrators, accomplices and beneficiaries of the registered criminal acts.
