Davis Cup: Morocco–Colombia Tie Seen as Key Step in Strengthening the Kingdom’s Global Tennis Standing
The Davis Cup tie between Morocco and Colombia, part of the qualifying playoff for World Group I, represents a crucial opportunity for the Kingdom to reinforce its presence on the international tennis stage, said Abdelaziz Laarraf, Vice President of the Royal Moroccan Tennis Federation (FRMT), on Tuesday in Casablanca.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of the encounter, scheduled for 7 and 8 February at the Union Sportive Marocaine Tennis Club (USM), Laarraf stressed that all logistical arrangements have been put in place to ensure the success of this high-level international competition. He added that the choice of Casablanca once again highlights Morocco’s ability to host major sporting events and reflects a clear determination to restore the prestige of national tennis.
For his part, national team captain Hicham Arazi said the players are continuing their preparations under good conditions, driven by the ambition to secure qualification for Davis Cup World Group I. He expressed confidence in the Moroccan team’s ability to rise to the challenge.
Arazi also underlined the special significance of this tie, as it marks the official return of the Davis Cup to Morocco after an absence of more than twenty years.
Beyond its sporting stakes, the comeback of the Davis Cup carries strong symbolic value. It revives a collective memory that remains vivid among Moroccan tennis fans. The last time Casablanca hosted the competition, in 2003, the public witnessed a historic victory over Great Britain in a playoff that remains one of the standout moments in the history of Moroccan tennis.
Morocco earned its place in this playoff after convincing victories over Zimbabwe, by four matches to nil, and South Africa, by four matches to one.
