U.S. Congressman Mike Lawler: Morocco, a “Historic Ally” and “Reliable Partner” of the United States in the MENA Region

Morocco is a “historic ally” and a “reliable partner” of the United States in North Africa and the Middle East, affirmed U.S. Congressman Mike Lawler, while calling for the deepening of the exceptional alliance that has linked Rabat and Washington since 1777.

“Morocco is a faithful and reliable partner, and it is essential to deepen this alliance as we face threats not only in the Middle East, but also across North Africa,” stressed Mr. Lawler in an opinion piece he signed in the American daily Daily News, entitled “Alliances Abroad Safeguard Our Homeland Security.”

In this respect, Mr. Lawler, who chairs the U.S. House Subcommittee on the Middle East and North Africa, highlighted the Kingdom’s leading role in security matters in Africa. Morocco plays “a central role,” he underlined, notably through its “strong” military cooperation with the United States and its security cooperation with African countries.

Reflecting on the “enduring friendship” between Morocco and the United States, Mr. Lawler recalled his visit to the Kingdom last August, at the head of a bipartisan congressional delegation. During this visit, members of the delegation reaffirmed the United States’ recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara.

The delegation members also underscored the prospects for cooperation between Morocco and the United States following talks in Rabat with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita.
