US Ambassador Richard Duke Buchan III Visits Essaouira, a Living Crossroads of Dialogue Between Cultures
The city of Essaouira once again confirmed its status as a leading hub of intercultural dialogue and values based diplomacy during the visit of His Excellency Richard Duke Buchan III, the new Ambassador of the United States of America to the Kingdom of Morocco. This highly symbolic visit took place at Bayt Dakira, an emblematic site of shared memory and coexistence, at the invitation of Mr André Azoulay, Advisor to His Majesty King Mohammed VI.

The meeting was held in the presence of Tarik Ottmani, Mayor of Essaouira, and Soufiane Hamaini, Vice President of the Essaouira Mogador Association, highlighting the involvement of local stakeholders in promoting the historical and cultural role of the trade wind city.
On this occasion, a detailed presentation was delivered to His Excellency the Ambassador, highlighting the depth and uniqueness of Moroccan American relations, among the oldest in the world. It recalled the early diplomatic ties between the Kingdom of Morocco and the United States, built on historic friendship, mutual trust and a shared commitment to the values of freedom, dialogue and respect among peoples.
Essaouira, through its plural history and its unique spiritual and cultural heritage, was presented as a living symbol of harmonious coexistence between cultures, religions and civilisations. A true bridge city, it has for centuries embodied an open vision of the world, in perfect resonance with Moroccan diplomacy under His Majesty King Mohammed VI, based on tolerance, peace and the bringing together of peoples.
The visit of Mr Richard Duke Buchan III to Bayt Dakira therefore carries particular significance, illustrating the convergence of views between Morocco and the United States on the importance of intercultural dialogue as a driver of stability and international cooperation. It fully fits within the continuity of a strong bilateral relationship oriented toward the future, and one that is set to grow further in the cultural, diplomatic and strategic fields.
Through this stop in Essaouira, the new US Ambassador sent a strong signal of respect for Morocco’s history, identity and unique role on the international stage. A visit rich in meaning, once again confirming that Essaouira remains a space of universal inspiration, faithful to its vocation as a crossroads of cultures and consciences.
