Rebeca Grynspan, Secretary-General of UNCTAD: Morocco Is a Model of Economic Development and Logistical Integration

The Secretary-General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), Rebeca Grynspan, praised Morocco’s model in economic development and logistical integration on Wednesday in Geneva, describing the Kingdom as “an example to follow.”

In a statement to MAP following her talks with the Minister of Industry and Trade, Ryad Mezzour, on the sidelines of the 16th session of UNCTAD (October 20–23), Ms. Grynspan emphasized that “Morocco represents for us a model in port management, single-window systems, public-private partnerships, and its ability to share expertise with other regions through effective South-South cooperation.”

The UN official also highlighted Morocco’s strong performance in attracting foreign direct investment, noting that “while global FDI flows declined last year, they increased in Morocco thanks to the diversification of its economy and the strengthening of its productive capacities.”

The meeting, attended by Omar Zniber, Morocco’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva, and Abdelouahed Rahal, Director General of Trade at the Ministry, provided an opportunity to review the various areas of cooperation between Morocco and UNCTAD, particularly in food security, logistics, and trade. It also served to explore the opportunities offered by the Atlantic Initiative launched by His Majesty King Mohammed VI.

For his part, Mr. Mezzour stated, “We had very fruitful discussions on the Royal Atlantic Initiative, which has attracted great interest from the Secretary-General,” recalling that this ambitious initiative aims to strengthen integration and cooperation among African Atlantic nations in a spirit of solidarity, partnership, and South-South synergy.

The Minister also underlined Morocco’s prominent position on the international stage as a strategic, reliable, and innovative partner capable of offering inclusive and sustainable development models that benefit other nations.

On the sidelines of his meeting with Ms. Grynspan, Mr. Mezzour held several meetings with the heads of UN agencies and international organizations based in Geneva, as well as with a number of his foreign counterparts.

The Minister leads the Moroccan delegation participating in the 16th session of UNCTAD, where he also chaired a ministerial meeting of the Global System of Trade Preferences among Developing Countries (GSTP).
