Donald Trump “forcibly seizes” 50 million barrels of Venezuelan oil

Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that Venezuela’s interim government is preparing to transfer between 30 and 50 million barrels of crude oil to the United States, stating that he will personally control the revenues generated as President of the United States.

In a statement published on his platform Truth Social, Mr. Trump explained that this high quality, sanctioned oil would be sold at market price, and that the revenues generated would be placed under his control as president to ensure they benefit both the Venezuelan people and the American people.

“I am delighted to announce that Venezuela’s interim authorities will hand over to the United States between 30 and 50 million barrels of sanctioned, high quality oil,” Trump wrote, adding that he had asked US Energy Secretary Chris Wright to implement this plan immediately.

According to the American president, the oil will be shipped directly to US ports, where it will be sold, and the funds from this sale will be managed by his government in order to maximize the benefits for both countries.

This decision comes in the context of the operation recently carried out by US forces in Caracas, which resulted in the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife. It marks a significant step in relations between the two countries, placing the management of Venezuela’s vast oil resources at the heart of an ambitious American strategy.

Venezuela holds the largest proven oil reserves in the world, estimated at several hundred billion barrels. The prospect of transferring tens of millions of barrels to the United States is prompting varied reactions at the international level and could have significant implications for global energy markets.

While Washington presents this measure as an opportunity to boost energy security and economic returns for both peoples, some observers point out that such an agreement, given the political and military circumstances surrounding relations between the two countries, could raise criticism regarding the legality and fairness of the operation.
