Shock in Marseille: Medhi Benatia Resigns, Leaving OM Facing Internal Turmoil

Medhi Benatia has officially stepped down from his role as sporting director of Olympique de Marseille, one day after the team’s draw against RC Strasbourg, bringing to an end a period marked by significant internal tensions.

In a letter addressed to supporters, the former defender explained that his decision followed deep reflection. He referred to a growing sense of discomfort and a widening divide that he said he sincerely regrets. He emphasized that the Marseille environment demands constant accountability, stressing that at this club, results are the ultimate measure of success.

Taking full responsibility for his choice, Benatia clarified that the decision to leave was his own. He stated that the institution must always come before individuals and that he did not want his presence to hinder the club’s stability or the progression of its sporting project.

Despite his departure, he insisted that the season remains very much alive. Qualification for the Champions League is still within reach, and the team continues to compete for the Coupe de France, two objectives he believes are attainable for the squad.

Benatia acknowledged leaving his position with mixed emotions. He expressed satisfaction at having carried out his duties with professionalism, but also frustration at not having succeeded in easing the tense atmosphere surrounding the team. He maintained that the group possesses the quality necessary to meet the ambitions set at the start of the campaign.

Before closing this chapter, he delivered a final message to supporters, urging them to continue backing the players with passion while reaffirming his deep attachment to the Marseille club.

His resignation comes shortly after the departure of head coach Roberto De Zerbi, reinforcing the impression of instability currently hovering over the leadership of Olympique de Marseille.
