UN Security Council Resolution on the Moroccan Sahara: The Crown Jewel of a Visionary Royal Diplomacy
Participants in a symposium held Saturday in Casablanca highlighted that the recent adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2797 on the Moroccan Sahara represents a historic milestone and the culmination of the wise and visionary diplomacy led by His Majesty King Mohammed VI.

Jawad Kerdoudi, President of the Moroccan Institute of International Relations (IMRI), explained that in recent years Morocco has maintained strong momentum in defending its territorial integrity, particularly since the presentation of the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative in 2007.
He noted that the recent adoption of this landmark UN resolution marks a major diplomatic achievement and stands as the result of a clear, proactive, and forward-looking foreign policy under the leadership of His Majesty the King.
Kerdoudi emphasized that Morocco, under the guidance of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, has made the Moroccan Sahara issue a national priority, citing key initiatives such as the 2007 Autonomy Plan, the Royal visits to numerous African nations, and Morocco’s return to the African Union (AU) in 2017. These efforts, he said, have enabled the Kingdom to reassert its presence at the heart of its African environment and to strengthen partnerships across the continent.
He also reviewed Morocco’s continued efforts to complete its territorial integrity, recalling that these efforts persisted despite the artificial conflict surrounding the Sahara, fueled by the Kingdom’s adversaries.
For his part, Abdelhafid Oualalou, Vice President of IMRI, reflected on the special context of this year’s 50th anniversary of the Green March, marked by the recent adoption of the UN Security Council’s historic resolution recognizing the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative as the basis for resolving the regional dispute over the Sahara. He highlighted the numerous diplomatic achievements made by Morocco in favor of its territorial integrity.
Oualalou further stated that Resolution 2797 represents a significant breakthrough in Morocco’s Royal diplomacy, opening the door to a new era of stability and prosperity for the entire region.
Organized by IMRI as part of the Green March’s 50th anniversary celebrations, the symposium also served as an opportunity to recall the historic significance of this national epic, which remains one of the most defining symbols of Morocco’s unity, cohesion, and enduring spirit of solidarity.
